Goitrogens are chemicals that interfere with the body’s iodine
absorption. There are some foods that contain goitrogen, called
goitrogenic food. Goitrogenic food is a type of food that can interfere
with thyroid function. If eaten in excess, certain substances in the
food goitrogen will inhibit the normal function of the thyroid and can
trigger the goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland).
The thyroid gland is located beneath the vocal cords that regulate the balance of body metabolism and calcium. This gland functions very important in different metabolic processes that occur in the body. Thyroid controls the rate of energy burning, builds up the body’s energy, and regulates the body’s sensitivity to hormones. In addition, thyroid also produces the hormone Thyroxine (T4), Triiodothyronine (T3) that plays a role in metabolism and overall body growth, and thyroid also produces calcitonin (calcitonin) hormones that play a role in calcium homeostasis.
hyroid disorders can indeed be treated with treatment. But, do the prevention we can also do. Therefore, it is very important to know which goitrogenic foods to avoid thyroid sufferers.
There are some goitrogenic foods, namely:
Soybeans
Foods made from soybeans contain high levels of isoflavones which is one of goitrogen. Evidence suggests that if eating foods made from soy, including soy milk, tofu, and tempeh, can cause thyroid disorders including mumps and autoimmune thyroiditis. Formula milk from soybeans is considered harmful to the health of the baby’s glands and is associated with autoimmune thyroid disease.
Gluten
Gluten found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Almost all processed foods are potential goitrogens that can trigger Hashimoto’s disease, the main cause of hypothyroidism.
Vegetables in the cabbage family or Brassicaceae
Other foods belonging to the category of goitrogenic food are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, radishes and others. This vegetable can be a goitrogen, especially when consumed when raw and in large quantities. But these vegetables contain lots of healthy nutrients so it can still be consumed in moderate amounts and should be steamed or boiled first before being eaten.
